Boxed Selection of Ally's Shrimps and Cascade Salmon Flies
|
These boxed selections of
salmon flies, tied in the long
tailed shrimp style in sizes 10,
8 and 6, are among the most popular and effective of
our modern salmon flies. They include the famous
patterns devised by Ally Gowans - Ally's Shrimp in various colours including
original orange, red, yellow and purple, and the Cascade Shrimp in silver and
gold. Also included are the Magus and Black Boar, which have proven
their worth in recent seasons.
|
Each
fly selection offers practical variety for
use throughout the salmon fishing season, in a good range
of colours and sizes. The smaller, darker patterns will, in
general, be of most use in low, clear or warm water conditions while the
larger, brighter patterns will come into their own in high, cold or coloured
water.
Ally's Shrimp & Cascade

 |
Ally's Shrimp
The original and now
renowned pattern devised by Ally Gowans. This is one of the most popular
and effective of all salmon flies in use today on Scottish rivers. Worth
a try in a wide range of river conditions and at any time of year.
Supplied in sizes 10, 8 and 6. |
 |
Red Ally's Shrimp
A variant of the original,
the red hackle and tail replacing the original orange.
A good autumn pattern. Supplied in sizes 10 and 8.
|
 |
Yellow Ally's Shrimp
A very brightly coloured
pattern which shows up well in peaty water or on a bright day. Supplied
in sizes 10 and 8.
|
 |
Purple Ally's Shrimp
The purple version of Ally's
Shrimp, the orange hackle, tippet and tail being replaced by the darker
purple, producing a fly which can be particularly effective in clear
water conditions. Supplied in sizes 10 and 8.
|
 |
Cascade Shrimp
The Cascade Shrimp is
another of Ally Gowans's creations. It is a great allrounder and has
almost surpassed Ally's Shrimp in popularity. This version has a silver
rear body. Supplied in sizes 10, 8 and 6.
|
 |
Cascade Shrimp - Gold
A very slight variation of
the Cascade, with a gold rear body instead of the silver. Just as
effective. Supplied in sizes 10 and 8.
|
 |
Magus
I first used this fly in
1989 on the river Endrick, where it proved effective for both salmon and
sea trout. It has since taken salmon on several Scottish rivers
including the Teith, Dee, Alness, Allan, Ruchill and Earn. A good
allrounder, showing up well in a variety of river conditions. Supplied
in sizes 10, 8 and 6. |
 |
Black Boar
This is a fairly recent
pattern, making good use of Chinese boar bristles to provide a bit of a
kick in the tail. Combine the colours of black, red and silver and you
have a reliable recipe for success, particularly in clear or cold water.
Supplied in sizes 10, 8 and 6.
