Spinheads
Turn your fly into a spinner!
patent pending
|
|
The Spinhead is an entirely
new spinning device, a
fishing lure designed and developed by Grays of Kilsyth
primarily for the salmon fly fisherman who prefers the fly rod to
the spinning rod. The Spinhead, which can be attached to your fly or
used in place of your fly, is light enough (only
1 gram) and small enough to be
cast, with care, on a salmon fly rod, when river conditions might
otherwise warrant the use of the spinner. (see important safety note
below). The Spinhead can also be used on a light
spinning or baitcasting rod as a fishing lure for predatory species such as brown trout,
rainbow trout, steelhead, sea
trout, perch, pike and bass. Now available

Safety - Important
Please note that,
like a heavy tube fly, the Spinhead must be used with care and
in accordance with the instructions supplied with it. The
Spinhead is not the easiest thing to cast on a fly rod and must
only be used as follows:
|
- The Spinhead should be
used only by accomplished fly casters. Those new to
the art of fly fishing should not use the Spinhead.
|
- The fisherman must wear
effective head and eye protection (i.e. spectacles
and a hat) while casting a Spinhead.
|
- The Spinhead must not be
cast using an overhead cast or any style of cast
which might bring the lure too near the fisherman or
his rod.
|
- To prevent the lure coming
into contact with either the rod or, more
importantly, the fisherman, only a Spey cast
should be used by competent Spey casters using a
floating fly line (number ten or heavier) and a
powerful double - handed (or “Spey”) rod.

Boxed Selection of Spinheads

Now available
online
only from Grays of Kilsyth
| The Spinhead is
a new
type of fishing lure, a small and very light
weight spinning
device (only one gram), designed primarily for use on a salmon fly rod,
adding flash, mobility and life to your fly. It can be attached
to the front of your fly, as in the
photograph to the right, or used on its own in place of your
fly (see below). The Spinhead is
now available, in boxed selections of
six or twelve,
in a range of attractive colours and in two sizes. The smaller
size is easier to cast, while the larger size spins more
efficiently. The Spinhead can also be used on a light spinning
rod. The photograph shows a spinhead attached
to a small salmon fly beside a size 8 Cascade.

How to use the Spinhead
| The Spinhead is an
extremely versatile
fishing lure. It is small
and light weight spinner, which can be used, either on a fly rod or on a light spinning rod,
for many species of predatory fish. Although designed with salmon in
mind, the Spinhead may be used, on appropriate equipment and taking
appropriate safety precautions, for other species such as sea trout,
brown trout, rainbow trout,
steelhead, perch, pike, bass
or mahseer. |
 |
|
|
|
I have illustrated below some
ways to use the Spinhead: |
|
Attach the
Spinhead to the front of your salmon fly
For the competent fly
fisherman who prefers to stick to the fly rod in all conditions,
the Spinhead is light enough to cast, with care (see safety note
above), on a powerful salmon fly rod. Simply slip the Spinhead
on to your line, attach your fly and slip the silicone tubing on
the rear of the Spinhead over the head of your fly, to create a
spinning fly. A floating fly line should be
used.

|
Use the Spinhead
on its own in place of a fly
Use as you would a
tube fly. Simply slide the Spinhead on to your line, attach a
suitable hook - single, double or treble,
barbed or barbless - and fit the hook into the silicone tubing at the
rear of the lure. The hook, of course, is
easily replaced if damaged.
|
 |
|
Use the Spinhead
with a lightly dressed hook
A lightly dressed
single, double or treble hook can be used instead of a bare hook, to enhance the lure
and give a little extra mobility at the tail.
|
 |
|
Use the Spinhead
in
front of a tube fly
Simply slip a Spinhead, with
or without its silicone sleeve, on to
the line in front of a
tube fly to give that extra attraction in high or coloured
water.
|
 |
|
Use the Spinhead
on a light spinning or baitcasting rod
The Spinhead can be
cast on a very light spinning or baitcasting rod, either
unweighted or with the addition of a little extra weight, e.g. a
split shot or two, to aid casting.
|
 |
|
Use two or more
Spinheads at the same time
Two or more Spinheads may be connected in line, to
create a longer, heavier lure, particularly
for use on a spinning rod.
